A quick way to add VAT to prices shown exclusive of VAT.
Next time you are at the DIY store, catalogue shop,
or somewhere else that leaves VAT off the prices, try this way of working
out the VAT:
Work out half the price. Find half of this. Halve
it again. The VAT is about halfway between the last two values
There is no need to be precise with this method,
especially when your halving produces fractions!
Example:
A table costs £20. Work out half the price. Find half of this.
Halve it again. The VAT is about halfway between the last two values
So the VAT on £20 is about £3¾
or £3.75 (the actual value is £3.50, so the game of
four halves comes out a bit higher and helps you to be careful
with your spending).
